Those who fled

While over 6 million Ukrainians fled abroad during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, only one million have come back, according to UN figures. Preliminary Economy Ministry estimates show that attracting another 4.5 million people to return will

“significantly accelerate the pace of recovery.”

Fewer Ukrainians who fled abroad at the start of the full-scale invasion have returned home than forecasts predicted, the National Bank said in its inflation report for October 2023, published on Nov. 2.

But even though the Ukrainian government may hope that its country’s fleeing compatriots will return soon, I don’t think the time is ripe for that yet.
I know a young mother who went back with her little daughter a few months ago anyway, only to find herself in the middle of the firing line there a few weeks later. Not an ideal place to raise a young child.

There will be an estimated 200,000 more Ukrainians living outside the country at the end of 2023 than at the end of 2022.
