Looking forward to 2030 but also looking at the 2024 Russian seizure

Ukraine expects to begin accession negotiations to join the European Union in June, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 9.

It could well be that there is a nice project for Ukraine to join the European Union in 2030, but before that day Russia may not have conquered Ukraine.

In March 2024, Sweden officially joined NATO after a lengthy application process triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and was immediately vocal in its calls for other alliance members to do more.

Speaking at a joint news conference in Kyiv with the European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, Zelensky said he was putting “maximum pressure” on partners to increase supplies.

We cannot deny that Ukraine is in very bad shape for the moment. The much-promised support from Western Europe and the United States for the defence of Ukraine has been far too long in coming.
We can only conclude that the Russians are steadily increasing their efforts to conquer the south-eastern regions of Ukraine.

Russia carried out a large-scale attack on May 8 against Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, and Vinnytsia oblasts, mainly targeting energy infrastructure.

In a briefing, the Russian Defense Ministry said Russian troops were now in control of Pletenivka, Ohirtseve, Borysivka, Pylna, and Strilecha, all within two kilometres of the border. The Kyiv Independent could not verify the Russian Defense Ministry’s claims. Speaking to journalists, Oleh Syniehubov said the situation was “fully controlled.” Syniehubov claimed fighting was ongoing in four of the five villages claimed by Moscow.

Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported on May 11, that 1.775 civilians in Kharkiv Oblast had been evacuated from their homes amid renewed Russian attacks on the region.

We may not forget that an autocratic regime like Russia can readily prioritise the expansion of its defence industries over economic well-being to sustain its military actions in Ukraine, along with help from Iran and North Korea.

Because the Western powers have delayed so much with their arms provisions for Ukraine, the Russians have already been able to gain so much ground.
